The BNA welcomes the deposition of new strains of freshwater, brakishwater, seawater, hypersaline water and terrestrial microalgae and cynobacteria, which can be preserved by means of a subculture in liquid and/or solid media.
It is a requirement for depositing to have identified the strains to the species level by a taxonomic authority, and they should be devoid of protozoa, fungi and other algae. Depositions should include ...
- information regarding collection (site, date, collector, environmental data …)
- identification (who identified the strain, description…)
- known properties (e.g., pigments, toxicity, lipids..)
- and growth conditions (culture medium, temperature, irradiation...) etc.
|
Organisms must be submitted for deposit as liquid cultures or in agar. The minimum number of identical copies that must be supplied for deposit is five. The cultures of microalgae and cyanobacteria should contain a minimum of 102 to 104 cells per millilitre, depending on the species.
The average time required for analyzing viability accepted by the BNA is seven to 35 days.
The BNA will prepare its own lots of organisms at the time of deposit, and will make a subculture of the material supplied by the depositor. The new lots are prepared according to the needs for renewal of lots. When the culture has been grown through several transfers to fresh medium without decline in quality – unialgal culture, without fungi and protozoos and good growth rate- the depositor will be informed that the strain is accepted by BNA. BNA will assigned the strain a catalogue number accession and will be available to the public.
